The Story Behind Seal’s Scars
One of Seal’s most distinguishing features is the scars on his face, which have become an iconic part of his image. These scars are the result of discoid lupus erythematosus, a chronic skin condition he was diagnosed with at 21. Unlike systemic lupus, which affects internal organs, discoid lupus causes coin-shaped lesions that leave scars.
While initially self-conscious about his scars, Seal came to view them as a unique part of his identity. “Something that had kind of been initially traumatizing turned out to be something that has made me instantly recognizable,” he said. Seal’s perspective highlights his resilience and ability to find strength in what others might perceive as flaws.
Seal’s Battle with Mental Health
Beyond the physical scars, Seal has been open about his struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, which have plagued him for nearly 30 years. He recalled his first major panic attack in a recording studio, mistaking it for a heart attack. Since then, he has focused on exercise and seeking support to manage his mental health challenges.
“There is no shame… there is no guilt in asking for help and talking about it,” Seal emphasized, encouraging others to seek the support they need.
