Smelly Trash Can? These Tips Will Prevent It | November 10, 2025

We can’t avoid having a trash can in the house, but one downside is that unpleasant odors can arise. Here are some tips to help prevent a stinky trash can.

The Location
Choose a spot for the trash can where it won’t be exposed to direct sunlight. Even indoors, the contents can warm up, which encourages odors to develop. The same goes for the heating. Don’t place it directly next to a heat source. A cooler spot is the best choice.

The Size of the Trash Can and Bag
The larger the household, the larger the trash can needs to be. However, make sure the size is not much larger than necessary. A larger bin takes longer to fill, and the longer the waste stays in, the more odors can develop. A smaller size ensures it gets emptied faster, giving odors less time to build up. But also make sure to replace the bag in a timely manner if you have less waste and the bag isn’t filling up quickly. Emptying it every two days is recommended.

Absorbing Odors
It’s never entirely possible to prevent odors from coming out of the trash can, but there are various ways to absorb them. A simple method is to sprinkle a small amount of baking soda or powder detergent inside the can. Coffee lovers can use leftover coffee grounds. A small layer of fine cat litter also works well. Not only does it absorb odors, but it also soaks up any liquids. By sprinkling some litter on the bottom of the trash can, as well as inside the bag, you help absorb any mess if the bag has a hole. The same applies to old newspapers—placing one at the bottom of the bin or bag effectively absorbs the mess.
