The unbelievable story of Amanda Scarpinati moves me to tears

For decades, Amanda Scarpinati cherished a single, faded black-and-white photograph: an image of a nurse cradling her tenderly as a baby.

The photograph was taken in 1977 at a hospital in New York after Amanda, then just 3 months old, suffered a serious, devastating accident. She had fallen from a sofa into a hot-steam humidifier, leaving her with third-degree burns. In the resulting photo, the tiny girl’s head is wrapped in thick gauze as the nurse does her utmost to comfort her.

Over the next few years, Amanda endured several painful operations and was frequently bullied by her classmates because of her appearance. Whenever Amanda was having a terrible day, she would invariably turn to that black-and-white photo of the nurse. The image brought her immense comfort, reminding her that there was once a person who cared so deeply for her during her most fragile moments.

Amanda held onto the hope of one day finding her “guardian angel.” She searched fruitlessly for 20 years, eventually deciding to turn to social media for one last, desperate attempt.

What happened next is an incredibly heartwarming story of connection and perseverance that simply had to be shared.

The year was 1977 when Amanda Scarpinati, then a vulnerable 3-month-old infant, was rushed via ambulance to the Albany Medical Center in New York. She had suffered severe third-degree burns after falling from a sofa and into a hot-steam humidifier.

At the hospital, she was immediately placed in the care of a young, compassionate nurse. The black-and-white photos taken that year capture an intimate moment, showing the nurse holding Amanda securely in her arms and smiling with profound tenderness at the injured baby.

The infant Amanda Scarpinati eventually recovered from the devastating burn incident, but her ordeal was far from over. Tragically, she was subjected to endless, merciless bullying throughout her childhood because of the resulting disfigurement from her burns.

“Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented,” Amanda shared with news agency AP. The childhood pain found an unlikely solace in the old photograph: “I’d look at those pictures and talk to her, even though I didn’t know who she was. I took comfort looking at this woman who seemed so sincere caring for me.”

Amanda carried the dream of one day being able to find the compassionate nurse who had comforted and cared for her during that tough time. After a determined but unsuccessful 20-year search, Amanda decided to turn to social media as a last resort.

She shared the black-and-white photos on her Facebook page and posted a heartfelt plea: “I would love to know her name and possibly get a chance to talk to her and meet her. Please share, as you never know who it could reach.”

Amanda Scarpinati’s emotional Facebook post requesting help to find her childhood nurse spread like wildfire across social media platforms. Incredibly, the very next day, she received the long-awaited message that changed everything.

Angela Leary, a woman who had worked as a nurse at the same Albany Medical Center back in 1977, instantly recognized her colleague, Susan Berger. Susan, who was just 21 years old and fresh out of college at the time of the photograph, had also saved copies of the pictures and had never forgotten the tiny, injured girl she had cared for.

“I remember her. She was very peaceful,” Susan recalled. “Usually when babies come out of surgery they’re sleeping or crying. She was just so calm and trusting. It was amazing.”

Not long after the internet connected them, the pair finally had an emotional, long-awaited reunion after 38 years.

“I don’t know how many nurses would be lucky enough to have something like this happen, to have someone remember you all that time,” Susan says.

“I feel privileged to be the one to represent all the nurses who cared for Amanda over the years.”

I was so moved when I read this incredible story, especially considering everything Amanda has been through.
