Introduction:
Sweet and sour onions are a flavorful, tangy-sweet dish that complements a wide variety of main courses. Whether you’re serving them with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or even as a topping for burgers and sandwiches, these onions provide a burst of bold flavor. The balance between the sweetness of the onions and the tanginess from vinegar creates a mouthwatering side dish that enhances any meal. Perfect for barbecues, dinner parties, or simply as a comfort food favorite, sweet and sour onions are sure to become a household staple.
Ingredients:
2 large red onions, thinly sliced
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
1 tablespoon fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)
1/2 cup water
Directions:
Prepare the onions: Start by peeling and thinly slicing the red onions. The thinner the slices, the better they will absorb the marinade and soften during cooking.
Make the marinade: In a medium bowl, combine the white vinegar, honey (or maple syrup), olive oil, salt, black pepper, and optional crushed red pepper flakes. Whisk together until the honey is dissolved and the mixture is well combined.
Cook the onions: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the olive oil and sliced onions. Sauté the onions for about 3-4 minutes until they begin to soften, stirring occasionally.
