On January 26, 2009, six boys and two girls were born in the US by cesarean section. Nadia Suleman, who was already a mother of six, became a mother of fourteen without the financial assistance of her husband.
She was thirty-four years old.
Although Suleman attributes the birth of each of her children to in vitro fertilization, she asserts that the doctor who transferred twelve embryos lied to her.
The doctor lost his medical license for unethical practices, and the case of Suleman prompted further regulation of in vitro fertilization in the US.
Nadia was dubbed “Octomom” and became the target of both adoration and criticism. She has attempted to monetize her children via reality TV and other ventures, but she insists that she loves them and did not have them for the sake of fame or fortune.
