Flavors vary depending on region and local tastes. Among these ingredients are monosodium glutamate (MSG) and carmine, a dye extracted from beetles that are crushed and boiled in ammonia or sodium carbonate. It should be noted that the Department of Agriculture does not require manufacturers to list flavorings on labels, allowing for the presence of a variety of undeclared ingredients.

Studies have also linked deli meats, especially hot dogs, to serious health risks. Research conducted by the University of Hawaii found that consuming deli meats increases the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67%.

One of the most concerning additives in hot dogs is the presence of nitrates and nitrites. Even organic hot dogs can contain high levels of these compounds. When heated, they react with amines found in processed meats to form nitrosamines, chemicals that have been linked to an increased risk of several cancers, including bladder, pancreatic, colon, and stomach cancers.
