Begin by preparing the patties. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, minced onion, breadcrumbs, garlic, salt, and pepper.

Mix everything together until well combined but not overworked. Shape the mixture into even patties, making about six to eight depending on your preference. Set them aside.

Next, heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little oil. Once the pan is hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet.

Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Once they’re done, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.

In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook for about 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they soften and begin to brown. This will create a flavorful base for your gravy.

To make the gravy, whisk the beef broth and brown gravy mix in a separate bowl until smooth. Pour this mixture into the skillet with the onions and mushrooms.

Bring it to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Allow the gravy to cook for about 5 minutes until it thickens.

For an extra layer of flavor, stir in the ketchup and Dijon mustard if you’re using them. They add a subtle tang and richness to the gravy.

If you want a thicker gravy, make a slurry by mixing the cornstarch with a little cold water, then add it to the gravy mixture. Stir and let it cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
