When I Checked Our Shared Calendar, I Didn’t Expect To See 3PM Every Thursday

Despite Alex’s calm demeanor, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this appointment than met the eye. Over the next few days, I watched them more closely, noting the way they seemed slightly more distracted, their phone more often in hand, with messages they never shared.

Thursday arrived, and with it, the “Appointment.” I knew Alex would be leaving the house this time, an unusual occurrence since they usually worked from home. As they prepared to leave, I asked again, “Do you need anything for your meeting today?”

Alex paused, their hand hovering over their phone. “No, I’m all set,” they said, their tone light but with an undercurrent of tension.

Once they were gone, I sat in the quiet of the house, my mind racing with possibilities. I decided to call Alex’s office, just to confirm the meeting. “Hi, this is Jamie, Alex’s partner,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “I was just checking if they’re at the office today?”

The receptionist’s voice was polite but firm. “I’m sorry, but Alex doesn’t have any meetings scheduled here today.”

My heart sank, the confirmation of my fears hitting me like a wave. I thanked the receptionist and hung up, the silence of the house now feeling oppressive.
