By evening, I was more than ready for the meeting. I arrived early at the nondescript café, choosing a corner booth far from prying eyes. My colleague, Sam, joined me shortly after, his expression serious. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” he said, taking a seat. I slid the folder across the table, watching his face as he read. He paused, looking up at me with a mix of astonishment and concern.
“This is…heavy,” he said, his voice low. “Are you sure you’re ready to dig into this? It could get messy.” I nodded, knowing that if I didn’t act, the consequences could be worse. “I need to understand who we’re dealing with,” I replied, the resolve in my voice surprising even me.
We discussed our next steps, careful to avoid naming names or revealing too much. Sam suggested reaching out to a contact he had in legal, someone who could provide insight without raising alarms. “But be careful,” he warned. “The higher you go, the murkier it gets.”
