Back at my apartment, I spread the documents across the kitchen table. The legalese was daunting, but I was determined to understand every clause, every stipulation. It was clear that my father had made these changes without consulting me or any of my siblings.

I picked up my phone and dialed my brother, James. “Hey, have you heard anything about a new will?” I asked, trying to sound casual.

“No, why?” he replied, the sound of surprise evident even through the phone.

“I found out today that there’s a new version. It’s… different,” I said, choosing my words carefully.

James sighed. “We need to get everyone together and figure this out,” he suggested. “Maybe there’s something we’re missing.”
