When I Went To The Lawyer’s Office For A Routine Check, I Didn’t Expect To See The Bill

We arranged to meet at a café near her office the next day. I arrived early, nerves twisting my stomach into knots. The café was bustling, the aroma of coffee blending with chatter from other patrons. I chose a corner table, trying to calm my racing thoughts.

Sarah arrived shortly after, a file in hand and a reassuring smile on her face. “I’ve been going over the documents,” she said, sliding the file across to me. “There’s a clause here that might give us some leverage.”

I scanned the paper she pointed to, my heart leaping at the possibility. “It says here that any changes in fees should have been communicated in writing, at least thirty days prior,” Sarah explained. “Did you receive anything like that?”

I shook my head, trying to recall any such communication. “No, nothing. Not a letter, not an email,” I replied, hope flickering to life.

“Then we might have a case,” Sarah continued, her confidence infectious. “I can help you draft a response, challenging the fees based on this oversight.”

Gratitude flooded through me. “Thank you, Sarah. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”

“Don’t mention it,” she smiled. “We’ll get this sorted. Just hang in there.”

As we worked through the response, I felt the weight that had settled over me begin to lift. It wasn’t over, but at least I wasn’t alone in the fight. With Sarah’s help, I had a chance—a small one, but a chance nonetheless.
