The problem with high-tech Japanese toilets was the abundance of symbols and buttons on the remote controls, which often confuse foreign tourists. On the eve of the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, the Japanese government asked toilet manufacturers to standardize the symbols on smart toilet remote controls.

However, in Japan, in addition to high technology, simpler devices have been preserved: bowls with a traditional bottom. They are often found in public places. Some toilets are equipped with Western-style (WS) and Japanese-style (JS) toilets.

Tourists face a dilemma when using Japanese-style toilets. It is impossible to sit completely on such a toilet. You need to take the eagle’s position and look at the tank, not at the door, as is common in other countries. Special signs in the toilets provide information on this.
