“Angela, where did you get this?” Kaylee asked, her voice trembling.
Angela looked up from a table of knick-knacks, startled by Kaylee’s tone. “I bought it at the second-hand store by the bus station last week. Why? Is something wrong?”
Kaylee felt a mix of relief and dread. Amanda had been missing for two weeks, her disappearance initially chalked up to a rebellious phase, but it was clear now that something more serious was happening. Her phone had been off, and her friends had no idea where she was. This was the first clue—real, tangible evidence that Amanda had been nearby.
“I think it’s my daughter’s,” Kaylee said, trying to steady her voice. “Amanda’s been missing for two weeks, and this is the jacket she was wearing when she left.”
Angela’s eyes widened in shock. “Oh, Kaylee, I’m so sorry. I had no idea. I just picked it up because it looked like a good buy.”
