You want a clean barrier between you and the comforter, right?
If you’ve ever purchased a sheet set, you know what’s typically included: a fitted sheet that covers the mattress, two pillowcases, and a top sheet—the flat sheet that lies on top of the fitted sheet. But a new debate has emerged: do we really need a top sheet?
The Top Sheet Debate
While there are differing opinions on how often sheets should be washed, the presence of a top sheet is now being questioned. Personally, I didn’t think much about it until college, where I noticed many of my male friends didn’t use a top sheet—or any sheets in some cases. But should we really be following the lead of teenage boys when it comes to linens?
How Often Should You Wash Your Top Sheet?
Sheets should be washed at least every two weeks, but ideally, once a week. This may seem frequent, but for good reason. The average person sheds skin cells, oils, sweat, and even saliva during sleep. These elements create a breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites, which can lead to allergy flare-ups or skin irritation.
Do You Really Need a Top Sheet?
Is a top sheet necessary? Not really. Its purpose is to act as a barrier between you and your comforter or duvet, preventing the buildup of skin cells, sweat, and bacteria on the comforter. This means less frequent washing of the bulky comforter. However, some argue that the top sheet often gets tangled during sleep, ending up at the bottom of the bed, making it somewhat pointless.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. If you choose to ditch the top sheet, be prepared to wash your duvet cover or comforter as often as your sheets, at least every two weeks.
