Introduction
Who says you need an oven to bake bread? This stovetop bread recipe is a lifesaver for those who don’t have access to an oven or want to keep their kitchen cool during hot days. With minimal ingredients and simple steps, this bread is soft, fluffy, and perfect for sandwiches, toast, or just enjoying warm with a pat of butter. Let’s dive into the recipe and bring bakery-style bread to your stovetop!
Ingredients
2 ½ cups (300g) all-purpose flour
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp instant yeast
¾ cup (180ml) warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
Directions
Activate the Yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
Prepare the Dough: Add salt, olive oil, and half of the flour to the yeast mixture. Mix well. Gradually add the remaining flour, kneading until the dough becomes smooth and elastic (about 8-10 minutes).
First Rise: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Dough: Punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into a round loaf or divide it into smaller pieces to form rolls.
Second Rise: Place the dough in a greased skillet or pan. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
Cook the Bread: Place the skillet on low heat. Cover it with a tight-fitting lid and cook for 20-25 minutes on one side. Flip the bread and cook for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and fully cooked.
Cool and Serve: Remove the bread from the skillet and let it cool on a wire rack. Slice and serve warm or store for later.
Serving and Storage Tips
Serving: Enjoy stovetop bread fresh with butter, jam, or your favorite spread. It’s also great for sandwiches or dipping into soups and stews.
Storage: Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, wrap it tightly and freeze for up to a month. Thaw and reheat before serving.
