A large study analyzing around 500,000 medical records found that severe viral infections like encephalitis and pneumonia significantly increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS. Researchers identified 22 strong associations between viral infections and brain diseases. For example, people treated for viral encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, were 31 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Pneumonia after the flu was also linked to higher risks of Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, and ALS.
