Combine Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine 400 ml of warm milk, 200 ml of warm water, 40 g of sugar, and 11 g of dry yeast. Mix well until the yeast dissolves. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating that the yeast is activated.
2. Make the Dough
Add Oil and Egg: Add 100 ml of vegetable oil and 1 egg to the yeast mixture. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
Incorporate Flour and Salt: Add 1.5 teaspoons of salt and sift in 950 g of flour gradually, mixing until a soft dough forms. Start with a spatula or wooden spoon, then switch to your hands once the dough comes together.
Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
3. First Rise
Divide and Shape: Divide the dough into two equal parts and shape each into a ball.
Let Rise: Place the dough balls on a floured baking sheet, dust them with flour, and cover them with cling film. Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for 30 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
4. Shape the Buns
Roll Out Dough: Roll out each dough ball to a diameter of about 37 cm (14.5 inches) and a thickness of 0.7-1 cm (1/4-3/8 inch).
Cut Out Buns: Use an 11 cm diameter bowl or cookie cutter to cut out round buns. Place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper, leaving space between each bun.
5. Second Rise
Cover and Rise Again: Cover the buns with cling film and let them rise in a warm place for another 20-30 minutes until they puff up.
6. Brush and Bake
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Prepare Egg Wash: Mix 1 egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of milk to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash for a shiny, golden finish.
Sprinkle with Sesame Seeds: Sprinkle white sesame seeds on top of the buns for added flavor and texture.
Bake: Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
7. Serve
Cool Slightly: Let the buns cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
Enjoy: Serve warm with your favorite burger fillings, or use them for sandwiches, with butter, or as a side with soups and salads.
